The Unpopular Woman Love Post

The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

And now, knock yourselves out!

ETA: The character and the fandom should both be named in the subject line, I forgot to mention the fandom initially. Sorry about the inconvenience!

ETA 2: If you want to share you thoughts about a character who has a thread, please reply to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

Relena (Gundam Wing)
It's been years since I watched Gundam Wing, and I can't remember anything beyond the broad details of the plot (the very broad details). However, I remember how much I loved Relena. She began the series as a sheltered young woman, and ended up the ruler of a besieged country. She faced hard choices, and stood by her beliefs--as unpopular as they may have been.

There were no easy choices in the Gundam Wing universe, and I don't understand why Relena's pacifism was so much worse than the belief that destroying the world was the only way to achieve peace.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
While I wasn't attracted to her character at first, by the end of the series, I'd really come to love Relena. She's incredibly strong, and truly rises above her origins, partly because of her feelings for Heero, partly because she begins to see that she can't just sit back and let things happen to her world.

When she finds out she's the long-last princess of the Sanq (or however you want to spell it) Kingdom, she turns her palace into a school for the DAUGHTERS of world leaders, so they can try to fix what their parents have screwed up. When the Romefeller Foundation (or OZ? I forget) turns her into the Queen of the World so they can use her popularity for their own aims, she turns the tables on them and actually gets the assembled politicians to listen to HER. She TRIES to pursuade her idiot big brother to not blow up the Earth. And she doesn't just fade out after the series; she keeps travelling, giving talks about peace.

Relena is AWESOME.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Random, but I, too, love Relena. I liked how she became such a strong woman and never seemed to let herself bend completely to the strong wills around her. She kind of grew into being an awesome leader.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
I completely agree. Her character grew so much - by the end, she was one of my favorites.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Relena's arc is one of the strongest character arcs in the series, and the fact that people dismiss her as a spoiled brat never fails to rankle me.

People often forget that Relena didn't start out a pacifist - she was thrust into the choice of where she stood and chose it because of her legacy first and only learned how to believe in her own ideals later. Pacifism wasn't an easy choice for Relena - she didn't have the crushing guilt that drove Quatre into his beliefs, nor the autodidactic drive that powered Treize's warmongering, or the self-negating protective instinct that made Heero as suicidal and as noble as he was. All she had was her father's memory, her father's dream, and the fact that he died believing in it. (It's no wonder that until Noin tracked her down she was borderline-suicidal; all she really had as an example that life was worth living was her father, and then he died in her arms.)

It wasn't a dream she believed in as anything except a front to keep that dream alive, for a while - "The Gundams will punish you for your arrogance!" (spoken to the gathered nobility in episode 10) isn't the outburst of a pacifist - but by the end of the series she's learned how to believe, and how to fake it when she's too human to trust in her own words. She has a backbone of steel and a stare that can make dictators fumble for words to speak. I defy anyone to tell me that she was anything less than fiercely beautiful during the brief time she spent as Queen of the World, that she didn't wring every drop of influence and power out of her figurehead's position.

Pacifism is a hard choice in any world; in a world like Relena's, even harder, but she didn't just believe in it, she made it work as best she could, with ruthless practicality and enough wide-eyed idealism to make it sound real. Most importantly, she listened. She was open. She wanted a dialogue. She spoke to Noin, agreed with Heero, debated (furiously) with Dorothy, and listened, even when everyone else was too afraid of what might come next.

She was willing to sacrifice herself for her ideals. She knew what it felt like to have someone else's blood on her hands; she'd nearly ended up with Lady Une's on her own, after all. She knew what it took to kill a person, and knew that the hardest choice to make was how to say no to that. She was a pacifist; she wasn't blind. I'm not a pacifist at heart, but Relena made me respect the people who are.

She's not just one of my favorites - she is my favorite character in the series.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
This was a *gorgeous* look at what makes Relena such a fantastic character.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. This post truly brightened up my day.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)

Me, I fell in love the moment Heero walked into her classroom and I saw the look on Relena's face as she decided how to deal with it. That incredible look of defiance in the face of a guy who knocked out four grown men just a day before. Admittedly, inviting him to her birthday was an unorthodox way of trying to get answers out of him, but I will never understand where the rampant accusations of "stalkerism" come from. She can't get more beautiful to me than when she's wearing that fiercely determined expression. And luckily, it never leaves!

I'm going to get over my bashfulness and insecurity and rec my favourite Relena-centric fics by my own hand. This thread needs recs!

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Relena is awesome. She was one of the reasons I kept watching Wing back in the day. She truly is a strong woman, and neither rabid shippers nor people who think real women don't wear dresses/drive pink limos can stop that.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
My God, YES. Poor Relena was a sweet and naïve kid thrown into a world of adults after her adoptive dad kicked the bucket, and for someone always sheltered, she did very well in the end. But all the fans saw was the "Pink Menace" that got in between Heero and Duo.

ILU RELENA. <33333

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Relena was amazing. Her passion and ability to listen and to adapt to what was going around her were what made her such a strong and independent character.

I think it was really amazing to see this young, naive girl grow into a beautiful, compassionate and capable young woman. She wasn't always right, nor did she always make the most prudent decisions, but those decisions impacted her and she learned from them. I have never seen a character actively and as powerfully mold and adapt their worldview in the way that she did.

That and she strives to live for what she believes, and not to just let the world pass her by. She wanted change and so she went out and fought for it.

I think most people just get too comfortable with early characterization and then can't accept that characters will grow and change.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
I thought she was too "mopey teenager pines for her love" at first but even then I didn't actually hate her, I just didn't think she was that interesting. >.> And the fansites I was checking out back in the day didn't help my perception of her either.

But, I got to know the canon. ♥ Well, as much as I could via the novels and anime summaries. In which she was awesome and the complete opposite of what the fandom painted her as. I eventually came to like her so much I even RPed as her for a period of time.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Relena kicks all kinds of ass! She made shit happen, she got shit done. Much of what she did was with her life on the line. In fact, she was fighting just as, if not harder than any of the pilots. I mean, sure she doesn't start out amazing, but you know. CHARACTER-DEVELOPMENT OMG.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
I wish I could undo all of the Relena bashing I engaged in during my tenure in that fandom. Relena is cool! In fact, the women of GW are a good deal saner and more competent than the men...

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)
Okay, so I'm almost a month late replying to this, but yeah. Relena isn't just my favourite GW character, she's also one of my favourite anime characters ever. I get into why here, but short version:

She's compassionate, has integrity, and was the only one brave enough to represent an alternative to the war. She embodied the ideal the others were just striving for. Relena did her best to change the world for the better.
